Kuo: OLED iPad Air and Mini-LED MacBook Air coming next year

Rumors have suggested that Apple will soon launch a new iPad Pro with a Mini-LED screen, but the company also plans to take this technology to other devices in the future. In a research note obtained by 9to5MacTrusted analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says Mini-LED screens will be used on the MacBook Air in 2022, while the iPad Air 2022 will have an OLED screen.

Kuo points out that while Apple now adopts Mini-LED screens for the new iPad Pro, other iPad models will switch to OLED screens, starting with the iPad Air next year. Mini-LED panels offer the same benefits as OLED, such as deeper blacks – since the backlight is based on several small LEDs – but they do not suffer burns.

However, as the Mini-LED is a more expensive technology, Apple plans to bring OLED to the cheapest iPads, which include the iPad Air and the basic iPad. Unlike the iPhone, where Apple had to use a custom OLED panel folded at the bottom, the OLED displays the company will adopt on the iPad are flat. This means that the cost of the new panels will be close to what Apple currently pays for each LCD panel used on the iPad Air.

According to the analyst, Apple has no plans to bring OLED to its productivity devices because of burn-in concerns, which may be more noticeable by users who work with the same software for hours. Kuo says that the MacBook Air will also receive a Mini-LED display by 2022, which will also spur adoption of this technology.

He said earlier that Apple is also working on new MacBook Pros redesigned with Mini-LED, which are due to be launched later this year. Bloomberg reported today that the next generation of iPad Pro will be launched in April with Mini-LED, but only the larger 12.9-inch model will receive the new panel.
