Koby Francis, suspected of shooting Pennsylvania police officer, arrested in West Virginia

A man accused of shooting a Pennsylvania police officer last week while handcuffed was captured Tuesday in a neighboring state after a hunt that involved several law enforcement agencies.

Koby Francis, 22, was taken into custody by US Marshals in an apartment complex in Clarksburg, W. Va., The Allegheny County Police Department said in a press release. His arrest occurred just over a week after he allegedly shot McKeesport, Pennsylvania, police officer Gerasimos Athans outside a police station.

The video of the December 20 incident released by investigators shows Athans opening the passenger door of his police vehicle, where Francis is sitting in the back. Francis reportedly opened fire several times with a gun that he kept hidden even after he had been searched previously.

Authorities said he managed to remove the handcuffs in front of him.

The officer responded to the fire, but there was no evidence that Francis was hit. Athans, 32, a four-year veteran in the department, was injured in the neck and shoulder. He was taken to a hospital and discharged.

The events took place after Francisco was arrested and carried out an order of protection earlier in the day. He was found sitting in a parked vehicle when authorities found a pistol inside and arrested him, police said.

He is now accused of attempted criminal homicide, escape, escape to avoid apprehension, aggravated assault and assault by firearm in connection with the shooting.
