KLM Royal Dutch Airlines will continue to operate long-distance services following agreements signed with the government on testing requirements. The Dutch airline planned to stop international flights amid strict measures.
Coming to an agreement
Earlier this week, the operator announced that it would cancel all of its 270 weekly long-haul flights to the Netherlands. This move followed the announcement that passengers and crew members would have to show evidence of a rapid negative coronavirus test done before departure.
KLM shares that after consulting the Netherlands National Institute of Public Health and Environment, KLM has a safe alternative test protocol for crews leaving the airport in countries that are not on the so-called safe nations list. Airline crew members will perform a rapid antigen test before departure from the Netherlands and after arrival. In addition, crews will have to follow strict quarantine rules when staying abroad.
Additional requirements
The carrier emphasizes that the Dutch government has indicated that this protocol meets its conditions. Meanwhile. KLM also introduced flight bans from the UK, South Africa and South America to the Netherlands from January 23 for up to one month. Cargo flights are an exception to this rule.
Those flying from high-risk areas are required to do antigen tests, as declared by the Dutch government. These tests are in addition to the existing PCR test requirements. However, not all airports around the world have facilities for passengers to test for antigens four hours before departure. Therefore, several passengers may face problems if they plan to travel. However, KLM shares that this will help customers whenever possible.
Still flying
The airline adds that plans for the limited set of so-called safe countries remain unchanged. Ultimately, it is trying to maintain services while meeting high security standards.
“Keeping flight operations in operation in a safe and responsible manner is and will remain a priority for KLM, even since the COVID-19 outbreak in early 2020. This has allowed us to keep the necessary travel, repatriation and cargo transportation away , “ KLM said in a press release seen by Simple Flying.
“In addition, KLM has taken numerous measures on board, such as HEPA filters, mouth masks and service adequacy. The safety and health of our customers and employees is a top priority for KLM. KLM also wants to continue to contribute to the fight against the Covid pandemic19. To this end, consultation on effective and viable adequate personalization for aviation is still required, taking into account international agreements. “
Ultimately, current requirements are still extremely strict and will keep passenger activity to a minimum. However, for those who need to travel during these difficult times, there is still some hope. In addition, crucial operations, such as vaccine distribution, may also continue with these policies in place. However, passengers and airlines expect more balanced measures, as the pandemic continues to shake the aviation industry.
