The warm praise for Manchin comes after the West Virginia Democrat, who has long cultivated a reputation for having an independent bias, said he would oppose Tanden’s nomination. A series of other Republican decisive votes soon followed.
Although the White House disagrees with Manchin about his vote in Tanden, Klain noted that he still needs to maintain a positive relationship with the senator to help promote his other priorities, including a $ 1.9 trillion coronavirus relief package that includes a minimum wage increase to $ 15 an hour that Manchin is opposed to.
“Obviously we disagree, but we were lucky to have his support in other nominations, obviously, we are working hard to get his support for the American Rescue Plan,” said Klain.
