Smart said Muschamp, who was fired with three remaining games in the 2020 Gamecocks season, will be working on the defensive side of the ball.
“It is very valuable to have a guy who was a coach in two places at our conference, he knows the intricacies of this conference,” said Smart. “He can help our team, our coaches in many ways. I’m excited to be able to have you with us. “
Muschamp, 49, was a head coach in Florida (record 28-21, 2011-14) and South Carolina (28-30, 2016-20).
Smart said he believed that Muschamp aspires to return to a role as coach on the pitch at some point.
“I would say that whenever you are an aspiring coach, you want to step onto the pitch and have the opportunity to go as a coach on the grass,” said Smart. “I know he hasn’t finished his coaching days yet. It is very important for him to get out of here, relate and develop a position group and a coach.
“Your family has been your focus here recently. I know he feels he has moved his family across the country and this is an opportunity for him to repay and be with them and to be able to watch his son play. “
