It looks like California may soon see Kimberly Ann Guilfoyle’s return.
San Francisco’s former first lady and governor Gavin Newsom’s ex-wife lives in Florida with boyfriend Donald Trump Jr., but Politico reports that this may change soon.
The authors of the publication’s most recent California Playbook newsletter, “we heard reports that she is considering returning to the Golden State – and is being urged by some Republicans to run for public office.”
The Politician does not mention what that position could be. One would think that Guifoyle, a Trump ally with a national profile and a former prosecutor who worked in the San Francisco Public Prosecutor’s Office, could look for something prominent as a governor (a 2022 showdown against his ex would be surreal, to say the least) attorney general (even if Xavier Becerra is not confirmed as Joe Biden’s Secretary of Health and Human Services, his term expires in 2022).
However, the last time a California Republican was elected to a state post was in 2006, when Arnold Schwarzenegger was re-elected as governor. In addition, Trump is extremely unpopular in California, losing the state by almost 30 points in November, outperforming John McCain in 2008 (loss of 24 points) and Mitt Romney (loss of 23 points) in 2012.
Republicans who encourage Guilfoyle to run for office may instead be trying to recruit his services to win back the Chamber of Deputies. The National Republican Congressional Committee recently listed four California districts as targets in the 2022 midterm, so it would be possible for Guilfoyle to move to any of these districts now with the intention of running in 2022.
The seemingly more likely scenario is Guilfoyle launching a remote candidacy for something across the state in the hope that his presence at the polls will motivate members of the Republican base across the state to go to the polls, thus helping the party’s efforts in the four district targets. .
But for now, at least, Guilfoyle remains in Florida.
