Kevin McCarthy begs Republican lawmakers to “stop this shit”

During a phone call on Wednesday, minority leader in the House, Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), Told Republican Party lawmakers that he wanted all the infighting to stop, asking them to “stop this shit” .

Two representatives and an aide on the call told CBS News and CNN that McCarthy made the call without calling anyone by name. A known problem involves Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.), Who as president of the conference is the third Republican member of the House. Fiery supporters of former President Donald Trump want her removed from office, angry at Cheney because she voted for Trump’s impeachment earlier this month on the charge that he incited an insurrection.

McCarthy made it clear that if Republicans are turning on each other, they will not be able to focus on blocking the Biden government’s policies and gaining a majority in 2022, people on the call said. The congressional adviser told CBS News that McCarthy seemed frustrated, while a lawmaker told CNN that he delivered a message of hope, saying “the only thing that can stop us from winning the majority is us”.

McCarthy held some private conversations with members and reminded lawmakers in the so-called “no attacks on each other,” the legislator told CNN. Congressman Richard Hudson (RN.C.) also asked his colleagues not to be angry in public about metal detectors installed outside the House after the January 6 Capitol rebellion. Several Republican lawmakers were seen confronting security officials with anger after firing the detectors, and Hudson said that instead of having a public attack, they need to let the leadership know that they are dissatisfied before they can work on the changes.
