Kevin Feigeit’s mysterious Star Wars film has a screenwriter. Disney reportedly took advantage Michael Waldron, the writer of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and principal writer and creator of the next Disney + series Loki, to write the still untitled Star Wars feature film being developed by Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige.
Deadline informs that Waldron was hired to write the new Star Wars film being developed by Kevin Feige as part of the writer’s recent contract with Disney. This is the first Feige update Star Wars film since the project was reported to be underway in September 2019. It remains to be seen in what capacity Feige will be involved in the project, whether he will just be producing, assuming an executive position at Lucasfilm or any other option. We know that Feige’s Star Wars film is not one of the projects announced on Disney’s Investor Day, which includes the new Rogue Squad director Patty Jenkins’ film and an untitled project by Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi.
Disney declined to comment on Deadline news, but the deal appears to seal Waldron’s involvement with the studio in the near future, with this painting the possibility of a second season of Loki or other projects under Disney’s umbrella. Waldron has already had some success with the House of Mouse, rewriting Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness after original director Scott Derrickson stepped down.
But Waldron’s involvement in Feige’s Star Wars film suggests that the wheels are starting to spin in the development of the film. We haven’t heard much about the project since it was first reported to be under construction in the fall of 2019, when Walt Disney Studios co-president and creative director Alan Horn revealed:
“We are excited about the projects that Kathy and the Lucasfilm team are working on, not just in terms of Star Wars but also Indiana Jones and reaching other parts of the company, including Children of Blood and Bones with Emma Watts and Fox. With the end of the Skywalker Saga, Kathy is chasing a new era in the Star Wars narrative and, knowing that Kevin is a diehard fan, it made sense for these two extraordinary producers to work together on a Star Wars film. “
Shortly afterwards, Feige cryptically joked that something was in development, but we didn’t hear a peep otherwise. Waldron’s involvement suggests that Disney and Lucasfilm are finally starting to get the film off the ground.
