Kentucky travels to South Carolina by invitation

COLUMBIA, SC. Kentucky’s women’s track and field team in 12th place and the men’s team in 22nd place will be challenged by the biggest field of the youth season Friday and Saturday, while the Wildcats participate in the South Carolina Invitational in Columbia.

Eleven teams will compete in the event, including Alabama, Alabama State, Auburn, Clemson, Georgia Tech, Florida, Furman, Kentucky, North Carolina A&T, Ole Miss and South Carolina. Seven of the women’s teams are classified nationally, featuring No. 9 Alabama , No. 15 Clemson, No. 17 South Carolina, No. 18 Ole Miss, No. 19 Florida and No. 21 Auburn, along with the Wildcats. Four men’s teams are in the top 25, including No. 6 Ole Miss, No. 7 North Carolina A&T, No. 15 Alabama and the United Kingdom.

Friday’s action will start at 9:30 am and will focus on events for multi-event competitors in the women’s pentathlon and men’s heptathlon. Saturday starts at 9 am with the conclusion of the heptathlon events, followed by a complete list of athletics competitions starting at 11 am. The Carolina Indoor Track & Field Facility will be the meeting place. It is the UK’s first trip to the facility, which opened in 2019.

After a week away from competition, Kentucky is leaving the Wooo Pig Classic in Fayetteville, Arkansas, in which the UK men finished third and the UK women finished fifth. Graduated student Molly Leppelmeier highlighted the UK’s performance with a shot put victory, a 50’5.25 “/ 15.37m shot. She also finished second in the shot put with a 65’7.75” / 20m sling . The Wildcats had several seconds and third places, both on the male and female side.

Junior sprinter Abby Steiner enters this week’s meeting with the best times of the Southeast Conference at 60 meters, 7.22 seconds, and 200 meters at 22.83. The 200m time is currently the best in the country in the indoor season.

Following this competition, the UK will have one more weekend of competition before the indoor championship events for the SEC on February 25th and 27th and the NCAA on March 11th and 13th.
