Kentucky fans feel vindicated after Dontaie Allen’s performance.

When Dontaie Allen illuminated Starkville with 23 points on a 7/11 three-point shot, he also caused an explosion in his home state of Kentucky.

It was a matter of not taking a boy from Kentucky for almost three years after Willis and Hawkins left. It was about not letting Jermarl Baker touch the ground after ONE mistake while Ashton Hagans battled Auburn at Elite Eight. It was about proving that Kentucky kids like Dontaie Allen, KyKy Tandy and Justin Powell deserve to be seen as legitimate basketball talent.

On a larger scale, it is a state and fan base that looks like an underdog. A state that is often rejected. Nationally dismissed in almost all walks of life that do not include horse racing and bourbon, dismissed when it comes to your high school athletes and a fan base that has often been dismissed by your own trainer.

For the first time, the people of Kentucky won.

Thanks to Dontaie Allen, BBN will get at least some credibility when it comes to questioning John Calipari’s decisions, and that’s a good thing. In many ways, I think it can help connect that bridge, so to speak, between Coach Cal and the fans.

While it was Bruiser Flint’s decision to leave Dontaie Allen in a game that Coach Cal might not have, it is worth noting that Cal admitted to the team that Dontaie Allen is coming for people’s minutes. A statement so surprising and powerful that it relegated Riley Welch to tears.

Now, this 23-point performance may be an anomaly – who knows what will happen to Dontaie Allen going forward – but at least for now he has the respect of John Calipari and it will go a long way for a Kentucky team that needed a reliable three-point shooter.

No matter what happens the rest of the way, at least Kentucky fans were justified on a Saturday night in Starkville for the beginning of 2021.
