In a recent episode of Chanel CONNECTS Podcast, Knightley explained why her attitude towards filming sex scenes has changed over the course of her career, and why she will no longer film them if they are directed by men.

“I don’t have an absolute ban [on filming sex scenes, but I kind of do with men,” Knightley explained. “It’s partly vanity and also it’s the male gaze.”

“If I was making a story that was about that journey of motherhood and body [acceptance] I’m sorry I’m sorry, but that would have to be with a [woman] film-maker.”

“I don’t want it to be those horrible sex scenes where you are all greasy and everyone is grunting,” Knightley continued. “I’m not interested in doing that.”

But Knightley also clarified that there are situations where she still films sex scenes. “Saying that, I sometimes say, ‘Yes, I completely see where that sex would be really good in this movie and you basically just need someone to look hot’.”

Knightley’s last film, Bad behavior, came out last year. It’s a comedy-drama about the Women’s Liberation Movement in London in the 1970s, and I’m looking forward to watching it!
