NC State Sophmore Katharine Berkoff played a 23.37 backstroke leg as part of his team’s 4 × 50 medley relay on the first night of the ACC Women’s Swimming and Diving Championship.
Berkoff was easily the fastest on the field and his 23.37 is now the fourth fastest performance in the event in history.
WOMEN’S 50 BACK – BEST PERFORMERS OF ALL TIME
- Maggie MacNeil – 23.05
- Rhyan White – 23.35
- Rachel Bootsma – 23.36
- Katharine Berkoff – 23.37
- Cindy Tran – 23.44
Rhyan White’s swim, now in second place, with 23.35 points, took place just minutes after Berkoff’s at the 2021 SEC Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships. White reached the first half after Alabama’s 1: 34.68 4 × 50 medley relay, which was fast enough to win the SEC title. Michigan Maggie MacNeil currently holds the NCAA record at the event, having reached 23.05 in last year’s Big Ten Championships.
This swim for Berkoff is a better decent time, improving his 23.60 from his swim in December 2020 at the Janice Hope Dowd Invitational. Berkoff was followed by Sophie Hansson26.31 chest leg, Sirena Rowe butterfly leg 23.02, and Kylee Alons«20.82 freestyle. Together, this resulted in 1: 33.52 in the NC state, which was the third fastest swim in NCAA history. Virginia won the heat with 1: 32.93, which was fast enough to set a new NCAA record, beating Stanford’s previous mark of 1: 33.11 in 2018:
