At 21, Kate Winslet reached stardom when playing Rose Dewitt Bukater in James Cameron’s blockbuster Titanic in 1997 – but fame comes at a price.
“I went into self-protection mode immediately [after ‘Titanic’ came out], said the British star on Marc Maron’s podcast “WTF” on Thursday.
“It was like night and day from day to day,” recalled the now 45-year-old. “I was subjected to a lot of personal physical scrutiny. I was criticized a lot and the British press was very rude to me.
“I felt intimidated to be honest,” she admitted. “I remember thinking, ‘This is awful and I hope it will pass.’ It definitely passed, but it made me realize that if that was what it was, I wasn’t ready to be famous. Definitely not. “

Winslet received an Oscar nomination for “Best Actress”, but lost to Helen Hunt for “As Good As It Gets”. Instead of chasing the main Hollywood films, Winslet decided to improve his craft and take on independent productions.
It wouldn’t be until 2009, when she won an Oscar for “Best Actress”, this time for “The Reader”.
“I was still learning to act,” she explained. “I felt like I wasn’t ready to do a lot of important work in Hollywood. I didn’t want to make mistakes and screw it up. I wanted to be in it for a long time. I tried strategically to find little things so I could understand the craft a little better and maintain some degree of privacy and dignity. “
At 25, Winslet welcomed a child, a daughter named Mia Honey Threapleton. She credited motherhood for helping her pay less attention to the press.

“It all evaporated a little,” she told the outlet.
Winslet met with Cameron, 66. This time it is for the sequel to “Avatar”, which is currently in post-production. The film is scheduled to premiere in 2022.
She has worked with her “Titanic” co-star Leonardo DiCaprio, again on 2008’s “Revolutionary Road”.
This year, Winslet is considered an Oscar candidate for her lead role in “Ammonite,” said Deadline.
