Spending holidays with affinity relatives can be stressful for anyone, but when your relatives are literally the most famous family in the world, the pressure reaches the next level. Kate Middleton admitted she was nervous when she spent her first Christmas with the royal family in 2011, after her marriage to Prince William. Of course, Kate didn’t have to worry, because she crushed it when it came to finding the perfect gift for Will’s grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II.
In an interview for the 2016 ITV special Our Queen at Ninety, Kate opened up about what her first Christmas with her in-laws was really like – and how she chose the perfect gift for the queen.
“I remember being in Sandringham for the first time at Christmas. And I was worried about what to give the Queen as her Christmas present, ”revealed Kate, according to People. “I was thinking, ‘God, what should I give her?’ I thought about what I would give to my grandparents. And I thought, ‘I’m going to do something for her’. Which could have gone terribly wrong, but I decided to make my grandmother’s chutney recipe. “
The homemade gift was a huge success and, looking back, Kate thinks she knows why.
“I was a little worried about it, but I realized the next day that it was on the table,” said Kate. “I think such a simple gesture has gone a long way for me and I have noticed that she has done this on many occasions and I think it just shows her consideration, really, and her care in taking care of everyone.”
So, in case you need to give a gift to the Queen, please note: Simple gestures are the best gestures.
