Two years ago, it was announced that Kate McKinnon would be playing Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes on Hulu’s limited series, The Dropout. She would also be one of the program’s executive producers. It seemed like the perfect casting decision; McKinnon looks a lot like her and excels at playing weirdos. But, unfortunately, nothing gold from pre-pandemic times can remain. Thursday night, Deadline announced that McKinnon has given up on The Dropout. No context was provided as to why she decided not to continue with the role of the prodigy who became a fraudster, but contractual breaches became a kind of fixation in the COVID era, with schedules being scrambled by production stops.

A source said Deadline that even with that last-minute problem for production plans, the limited series is still in the works. There must be another blue-eyed blonde available in Hollywood, right?

And if you were determined to see McKinnon play a real-life nut, don’t worry. She is still scheduled to play Carole Baskin, Joe Exotic’s enemy in Near NBC Tiger KingTV show based on, Joe Exotic.
