Kate Hudson addressed the criticisms that her recent film, “Music”, is receiving for portraying autistic people.
“Music”, co-written by musician Sia, shows Hudson as a recently sober drug dealer who finds himself in charge of looking after his younger sister, a teenager with special needs called Music, played by Maddie Ziegler.
The film, which won two Golden Globe nominations, was criticized by many for its interpretation of autistic people, as well as its decision to cast neurotypic Ziegler as someone on the autism spectrum.
Hudson was asked about the controversy during a recent appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live”, where she defended the film.

“I think when people see the movie, they will see the amount of love and sensitivity that was put into it,” Hudson told host Jimmy Kimmel when asked about the reaction around “Music”. “But it’s an important conversation to have, not just about this film, but as a whole – about acting.”
She continued: “For me, when I hear that there is someone who feels excluded, I feel terrible. It is a continuous and important dialogue to be maintained, about neurotypical actors portraying neurodivergent characters. It is an important dialogue to have with people with specialists. and that they know how to get involved in the conversation. I really encourage it. I think it’s important to say that we’re listening. “

In addition to Hudson, Sia has defended her film from critics who were upset when she launched the movie trailer on Twitter because she was not doing justice to the autistic community.
“I cast thirteen neuroatypical people, three trans people, and not as prostitutes or drug addicts, but [sic] as doctors, nurses and singers, “said Sia in response to a critic’s tweet.

Sia continued to respond to several people, including an individual who wrote: “Several autistic actors, including me, responded to these tweets. We all said that we could have acted in the short term. These excuses are just that … excuses. The fact The point is that no effort has been made to include anyone who is truly autistic. #NothingAboutUsWithoutUs. “
“Maybe you’re just a bad actor,” replied the star.

Shortly after the Golden Globe nominations were announced, Sia allegedly apologized for a scene in the film in which Ziegler’s character is contained in a way that can be dangerous for people with autism, according to the Daily Mail.
