“When people are upset about something, it is our job to listen and encourage more conversations with other people who want to tell these stories,” says the actress.
Kate Hudson on Friday showed up Jimmy Kimmel Live! where she discussed the criticisms of her latest film, Song.
The drama written and directed by singer and songwriter Sia has been criticized for its cast and representation of autism.
Hudson, who was nominated for a Golden Globe for his performance as Kazu “Zu” Gamble, said he felt the reaction was an “important dialogue”, but noted that the film’s intended message was expressed.
“I think when people see the movie, they will see the amount of love and sensitivity that has been put into it,” said Huson to Kimmel.
Sia’s decision to launch Maddie Ziegler as a non-verbal character with autism, as opposed to a performer on the autism spectrum, caused a huge reaction.
Telling Kimmel that she enjoyed the broader conversation, Hudson noted that she felt “terrible” that some people felt left out about the cast and character representation of Ziegler.
“The spectrum is very broad and should be approached with much more talk and understanding of how we can be more representative, what are the best ways to do this,” said the actress to Kimmel. “We want to tell the best stories we can. There is no one who wants to upset anyone. When people are upset about something, it is our job to listen and encourage more conversations with others who want to tell these stories.
