The film is about Music, a non-verbal autistic girl (played by Maddie Ziegler), who is under the tutelage of her drug dealer half sister, Zu (Kate Hudson).
Some of the main criticisms include, but are not limited to: The cast of neurotypical Maddie Ziegler as the film’s autistic protagonist, the offensive portrait of autism, the use of prone restrictions, the involvement of Autism Speaks and Sia’s responses to the whole thing .
“I think when people see the movie, they will see the amount of love and sensitivity that has been put into it,” said Kate. “It is an important conversation to have and it is not only about this film, but as a whole, about representation. For me, when I hear that there is someone who feels excluded, I feel terrible. “
“Nobody really asked me that. I was only asked to comment in one quote, and it is not an audible conversation, “she continued.” I think it’s an important and ongoing dialogue about neurotypical actors playing neurodivergent characters. It is important for people who are experts and really know how to get involved in the conversation, I encourage and we are listening. “

“I’m not the right person to speak to. It’s complicated.”
“The spectrum is very broad and should be approached with much more talk and understanding of how we can be more representative, what are the best ways to do this. It brings up something that has been going on for a long time, and what does it look like? “

“I always say: Storytellers, this is what we do. We want to tell the best stories we can. There is no part of anyone who wants to offend everyone ”.
“When people get upset about something, it’s our job to listen and encourage more conversations with other people who want to tell these stories.”
