Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was eliminated from Sunday’s playoff game against the Cleveland Browns when he was approached awkwardly and appeared to be suffering from symptoms similar to a concussion in the field.
The Chiefs were able to defeat the Browns with some heroism at the end of the game for veteran reserve quarterback Chad Henne, but as the Chiefs turned their attention to the Buffalo Bills, which they will host in the AFC Championship Game, an issue is now above all others: Will Patrick Mahomes be ready to play?
An earlier report by FOX’s Jay Glazer provides a reason for optimism.
“At the moment, he is on the concussion protocol,” Glazer said on FOX Sunday night. “Do you see him having trouble getting up [and] walking there, it’s more because they’re saying it was almost like he choked, about which I know a few things. Not so much a concussion, but it still has to go through the concussion protocol. He was trying to put himself back in the game, so there is a lot of confidence that he will be able to go next week. “
This is universal good news for Mahomes and the Chiefs. If Mahomes has not suffered a concussion or any other serious head or neck injury, all signs certainly seem to point to a quick comeback, just in time for the Chiefs’ third consecutive AFC Championship game.
After the game, Chiefs ‘head coach Andy Reid spared details, but he also had an optimistic tone about Mahomes’ immediate future.
“He’s really doing great,” said Reid. “I just spoke to him and he is fine. We will see how he is doing tomorrow, but now he is fine.”
