Kamala Harris ignores question about Cuomo sexual harassment scandal

Vice President Kamala Harris ignored a question about the growing sexual harassment scandal of New York Democratic governor Andrew Cuomo while speaking to reporters on Wednesday.

Harris spoke briefly to reporters after House legislators approved the Senate version of President Biden’s $ 1.9 trillion coronavirus aid package in a party vote. When the event was concluded, a reporter asked Harris to give his opinion on the charges against Cuomo.

“Madam Vice President, do you have any comments on Governor Cuomo?” asked the reporter. Harris left the instruction room without answering the question.

Cuomo has faced calls to resign in recent days after several women accused the governor of sexual harassment and other inappropriate conduct. Earlier on Wednesday, the Albany Times-Union reported that a former aide supposedly Cuomo groped her during a meeting at the governor’s mansion last year.

Critics asked Harris to condemn Cuomo for her tough line on Supreme Court judge Brett Kavanaugh and former Democratic senator Al Franken when they faced charges of sexual misconduct.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki addressed Harris’ position on the matter during a press conference last week.

“I think the vice president’s view is that she believes that a woman should be treated with respect. Her voices should be heard,” said Psaki.

New York State Attorney General Letitia James launched an investigation into the allegations. Cuomo said he would not resign and denied any wrongdoing.

“As I said yesterday, I never did anything like that,” said Cuomo in response to the Times-Union report. “The details of this report are distressing. I will not speak about the details of this or any other allegation, given the ongoing review, but I am confident in the outcome of the Attorney General’s report.”
