Purple has never looked so patriotic.
Vice President Kamala Harris, Hillary Clinton and Michelle Obama turned purple for President Joe Biden’s inauguration on Wednesday in Washington, DC – and the importance of the shadow was not lost on viewers.

Fashion fans quickly went to Twitter to praise the three women for wearing shades of violet, perhaps a nod to bipartisanship and unity. The color is created by the mixture of blue and red – the hues of the Democratic and Republican parties. Purple is also one of the official colors of the suffragette National Women’s Party since 1913, according to the organization.
According to Cosmopolitan, Harris may be honoring Shirley Chisholm, the first black woman to be elected to Congress in 1968 and run for president in 1972 for the Democratic ticket. Chisholm used the color purple in his campaign materials.

Harris and First Lady Jill Biden were also praised for using American designers. W reports that the new vice president wore looks designed by two black Americans for the historic event, choosing a jacket from Christopher John Rogers and heels from Sergio Hudson.
Dr. Biden wore a blue woolen coat and dress by Alexandra O’Neill of Markarian, reports The Independent.

The new first lady also wore purple for a farewell event in Wilmington. Del., And memorial service for coronavirus victims at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool on Tuesday.
