Two Big Ten basketball coaches went crazy in “March Madness” on Friday during Michigan’s basketball win over Maryland.

Michigan coach Juwan Howard was sent off and Maryland coach Mark Turgeon was assessed for a technical foul after a strident match in the second half of the Wolverines’ Big Ten quarterfinal match against Terrapins at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Turgeon and Howard had to be separated by coaches and players shortly after a media timeout, with 10:44 remaining in the second half and Michigan 10.

Howard seemed to be asking or shouting something towards the Turgeon bank, getting an animated response from Turgeon. The coaches met near the scoring table and were quickly joined by a handful of Wolverines, Terps and officials.

It seems that as soon as the authorities informed Howard that he would be expelled, he became even more irritated. Howard’s assistants had to hold him close to the central court as he advanced a few steps towards the Maryland bank.

Friday’s game was the first time Howard was kicked out of Michigan’s coaching role.

Big Ten Network side reporter Rick Pizzo said in the broadcast that, at the start of the timeout, Howard appeared to be aiming at his head, asking players to “use his head” as they walked towards the Maryland bank.

Pizzo reported that something was said to Howard from the Maryland sideline that apparently triggered him.

Turgeon received a technique, but remained in play as Michigan moved away for the 79-66 victory.
