justice league we live in a society

It was a phrase that reverberated all over the internet when it was spoken in a trailer for Zack Snyder’s Justice League: “We live in society.” For those unfamiliar, it’s a well-known internet meme, and not something you’d expect to see in a serious superhero movie. And it was a line said, without the slightest irony, for Jared LetoJoker in new scene for director Zack Snyder’s new four-hour cut Justice League. So, whose line was this? None other than Leto, of course.

One of the new sequences filmed for Zack Snyder’s Justice League is another sequel to “Knightmare”, a continuation of what we saw for the first time in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, Where Ben AffleckBatman’s has a vision of an alternative apocalyptic world, where everyone wears woolen coats. And you can’t have Batman’s worst nightmares come to life without his biggest enemy, the Joker. Jared Leto reprized his role as Prince Clown of Crime after his appearance in Suicide squad to make his special appearance in the new Knightmare sequel, with long hair and a curious lack of facial tattoos. The footage shows Leto’s Joker saying to Batman: “We live in a society”.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Zack Snyder credited Leto with the famous (or infamous) phrase on set:

“We stayed a little back and forth, and I’m going to give Jared credit for that little improvisation there, because it was very, very beautiful.”

I’m not sure if “pretty” is the way to describe an improvised line that tries, in a non-ironic way, to dominate a ridiculous meme. But apparently it was not “pretty” enough to be included in the film, then the joke is on us!

In the interview, Snyder also revealed that Leto and Affleck did not film the scene together due to scheduling conflicts. So it was just Leto improvising lines for anyone, which is very funny to think about. The Joker would be proud.

Zack Snyder’s Justice League makes its HBO Max debut today.
