Jurgen Klopp faces the puzzle of Thiago Alcantara while Liverpool considers future changes

Liverpool saw their 100% home Premier League record end on a frustrating afternoon against West Bromwich Albion.

Sadio Mane’s early goal for the Reds was equaled at the end of the game by the visitors, in a 1-1 draw at Anfield on Sunday afternoon.

The Premier League and world champions now have a quick turnaround before heading to Newcastle United for their second game in the festive period.

And here we look at the changes that Jurgen Klopp can make when his team is in action.

A play for Rhys?

Joel Matip is unlikely to be available while the Reds await the results of the scans on a suspected water supply problem that forced him out on the weekend.

Rhys Williams replaced Matip on the spot and would be Fabinho’s most likely partner in the defender, in front of Nat Phillips.

Jordan Henderson could do a job there, but Klopp shouldn’t want to take the captain out of midfield from the start.

Neco Williams is almost certain to have an advantage in the coming games, and will put pressure on Trent Alexander-Arnold at St James’ Park.

Andy Robertson is expected to continue as a left-back, although recovered James Milner is another option.

Thiago’s question

This game was marked as the long-awaited return of Thiago Alcantara to action after more than two months away due to a knee problem.

If it belongs to the bank, then Klopp at least has many options in the engine room, even if Naby Keita loses again as predicted.

Henderson, Gini Wijnaldum and Curtis Jones started against West Brom, but at least one must be shot for the bench.

It means that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Xherdan Shaqiri and Milner are options, as well as Thiago.

Minamino beating

Liverpool seemed a little out of ideas in their full-time attack against West Brom, and may be ripe for a new rotation on the front lines.

Takumi Minamino did well at Crystal Palace last week and performed well in Newcastle on the last day of last season.

And Klopp has the other option of asking the Japanese international to join the three regular strikers if Liverpool employ a 4-2-3-1 approach.

Oxlade-Chamberlain, Shaqiri and Divock Origi are other alternatives.
