Jurgen Klopp faces Naby Keita decision as Liverpool ponder defensive change

Liverpool suffered their fourth consecutive Premier League home loss after a poor result against Everton on Saturday.

The Reds suffered their first defeat in the Anfield derby in 22 years, losing 2-0 against their neighbors.

Premier League champions now have more than a week to prepare for a complicated mission last Sunday, Sheffield United.

And here we look at the changes that Jurgen Klopp can make when his team is next to take action.

Limited defensive options

Liverpool are awaiting the results of examinations for suspected Jordan Henderson groin injury, although the captain is almost certain to face a long period of absence alongside Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip.

With the persistent doubts about Fabinho’s physical condition, Klopp has little chance of change within the defense.

Ozan Kabak had a hard time against Everton, while his teammate Ben Davies has yet to kick-start the Reds.

Nat Phillips, however, was impressive in replacing stricken Henderson.

As a full-back, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson are expected to continue, with Neco Williams and Kostas Tsimikas in reserve.

Keita to enter?

If Fabinho is declared fit, it may well be the Brazilian’s return in his most used defensive midfield role.

Gini Wijnaldum, who has been in sixth place, looks tired lately and has been seen training separately for the team at Kirkby.

Curtis Jones and Thiago Alcantara were replaced on Saturday, with Naby Keita pushing for a call-up for the bank.

Xherdan Shaqiri and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are other options, although James Milner remains paralyzed.

The same again at the top

Liverpool may seek a change of formation to try to resolve their lack of threatening goals.

However, it would be a surprise if he deviated a lot from the usual 4-3-3, with 4-2-3-1 and, as on the second half Saturday, 4-4-2 the possible alternatives.

Divock Origi has played in eight of the last 11 games, but only twice as a starter.

This means that Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane are likely to be called up again.
