Let’s say that when Julia Roberts and Matthew Perry flirted Friends, they were courting each other in several ways. According to the show’s creators, Perry’s charm was what convinced Roberts to be a guest star on the series – and accept some dates!
Perry – who played Chandler Bing in Friends– dated Roberts famously between 1995 and 1996. While they kept their off-screen relationship private, fans are now getting a hint about how their romance started. Apparently, it all started with an episode entitled “The One After the Super Bowl,” where Roberts stars as Chandler’s ex-girlfriend Susie Moss. At least this is in line with a handful of Friends creators and writers who spoke with The Hollywood Reporter on Thursday, January 28th, where they talked about Perry and Robert’s on-screen romance in honor of the episode’s 25th anniversary (and just in time for this year’s Super Bowl!)
“Matthew invited you to join the program, [and] she replied to him: ‘Write me an article on quantum physics and I will do it’ ”, said Friends executive producer, Kevin Bright. “My understanding is that Matthew went out and wrote an article and faxed it to her the next day.”
Alexa Junge, a writer for the episode, added that “there was a lot of flirting about faxing” between the two. “They may have met before the episode, but she was interested in him from afar because he is so charming,” said Junge. “There was a lot of flirting because of the fax. She was giving him questionnaires like, ‘Why should I go out with you?’ And everyone in the writers’ room helped explain why. “Junge went on to reveal,” He could do very well without us, but there was no doubt that we were on Team Matthew and trying to make it happen for him. “
Another co-writer, Jeff Astrof, couldn’t believe Perry’s luck. “I remember being with her on the sides. She kept saying, ‘Chandler is so funny!’ And I said, ‘I wrote each of those lines!’ I don’t know if she fell in love with Matthew at the time, but they soon started dating, ”Astrof told THR, joking that he only had his“ horrible girlfriend ”to go home to.
