Joss Whedon was set to make his return to television with The Nevers, a series of Victorian “superheroes” that looked much until the Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator’s alley: a series of supernatural action, set in a rich fantasy world with a set of women who kick their asses. But Whedon left the project at the end of last year, with the hiring of HBO Philippa Goslett to replace him as a showrunner and executive producer. As a result, the first season, originally set to 10 episodes, has been reduced to a six-episode sequence. But these six episodes will debut on HBO soon, as revealed in the show’s first teaser trailer. To see The Nevers teaser below.
The Nevers Teaser
Set in a world where a population of people “touched” by powerful skills are persecuted, The Nevers seems to be one of those rare new original shows, although it carries a lot of pop culture inspiration – the HBO series seems X-Men finds Buffy finds League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.
Starring in a cast that includes Olivia Williams, James Norton, Tom Riley, Rochelle Neil, Eleanor Tomlinsonand Nick Frost, The Nevers was designed by Whedon, who was scheduled to do the showrun and executive produce the series before suddenly leaving the project in November. There was a rumor that his departure was related to Ray Fisher’s allegations in the Justice League defined, but none of this is confirmed. In a statement after his departure, Whedon attributed this to tiredness, saying “I am genuinely exhausted and I am returning to martial fighting my energy for my own life, which is also on the verge of exciting change.”
But despite the conflict behind the scenes to The Nevers, it looks promising! The world looks rich, women look tough, and the story seems ripe for development beyond Whedon’s intriguing premise.
The Nevers it is also executive produced by Bernadette Caulfield, Ilene S. Landress, Doug Petrie, Jane Espenson and Philippa Goslett. Amy Manson, Pip Torrens, Denis O’Hare, Zackary Momoh, Elizabeth Berrington, Kiran Sawar, Anna Devlin, Viola Prettejohnand Ella Smith complete the cast.
Here is the synopsis of The Nevers:
In the last years of Victoria’s reign, London is besieged by the “Tocados”: people – mainly women – who suddenly manifest abnormal abilities – some charming, others very disturbing. Among them are Amalia True (Laura Donnelly), a mysterious and fast-moving widow, and Penance Adair (Ann Skelly), a young and brilliant inventor. They are the champions of this new subclass, making a home for the Tocados, while fighting the forces of … well, almost all forces – to make room for those for whom history as we know it has no place.
The Nevers will debut on HBO in April and will be available for broadcast on HBO Max.
