Vince Clemente, from the Classic Tetris World Championship team, recently contacted Shacknews. He issued the following statement, which will be posted on the Classic Tetris World Championship website shortly.

It is with a broken heart that we share that Jonas Neubauer, 7-time champion of the CTWC, died suddenly on January 4.

Jonas has been an absolute pillar of positivity and humility for our CTWC family. We could never have asked for a champion, model and greatest friend. He was kind, genuine, hilarious, incredibly talented and a brilliant ambassador for the game. While he was the biggest final boss, he always had the warmest heart. He will live as a legend for our community and many others around the world.

Jonas, we miss you, we love you and we thank you for inspiring us to always be our best.

Rest in peace our mighty hero.

38-year-old Neubauer has competed on the professional Classic Tetris circuit since 2010. Shacknews was privileged to speak to the seven-time champion of the Classic Tetris World Championship 2019, where he talked about his competitive career, his love of Tetris, the pressures of competing against a new growing crop of players and their appearance on ABC’s To Tell The Truth.

Shacknews will monitor this story as it develops. We also wish to send our deepest condolences to the Neubauer family, including his wife Heather Ito.

Ozzie has been playing video games since he acquired his first NES controller at age 5. Since then, he has been involved in games, only leaving briefly during his college years. But he was pulled back after spending years in the quality control circles of THQ and Activision, mostly helping to boost the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a huge fan of platforms, puzzle games, snipers and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he is also a big fan of anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can’t enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?
