In The Mandalorian, the characters say “This is the way”. In case of great special participation from the second season however, it was not originally.
For a while Star Wars fans know that second season of The Mandalorian finished with Grogu (also known as Baby Yoda) leaving Din Djarin with a Jedi with whom he connected through the Force. A Jedi by the name of Luke Skywalker. It was an exciting moment for many fans, which raised a ton of questions for Star Wars moving on.
Usually, a revelation like this is something that a show will build upon after years of planning. In this case, however, that is not what happened. The idea came up during the process, not before him.
“No,” said Favreau when questioned by the WGA if bringing Luke back was always the plan. “The story unfolded while I was writing it. The Mandalorian inherits a lot from existence Star Wars stories, and when I write, that context is always a consideration. It was clear that, within the established continuity, certain things were likely to happen. “
That is, if Grogu were to be trained by a Jedi, the most powerful Jedi in the galaxy at that time was probably Luke Skywalker. And yet, bringing back the star of Star Wars it was not an easy decision, especially since presenting it has a potential impact on many other stories.

“We have enormous freedom that has been granted to us because of the time gap between films,” continued Favreau. “Dave Filoni and I are in constant discussion about how each story choice is impacted by, and would impact, the existence Star Wars material.”
We have discussed this in depth before (read here), but Favreau is right. While it is true that comics, books and games touch Luke’s story over this period of time and, of course, the films tell the full story, there are still decades between Return of the Jedi and The force awakens. Many of these stories happen close to The force awakens (after Ben Solo was born, for example) while The Mandalorian runs closer to Return of the Jedi. So much can happen between and, it seems, The Mandalorian will continue to explore more of that.
This is really the only thing about the plot that Favreau discussed in the interview, but he takes a deep dive into his writing process, launching the show, the emotion of writing Star Wars, and more; you can head to the WGA website to read it. The Mandalorian the third season is set to debut in 2022.
