John Mulaney has left rehab and is in sober outpatient treatment

Comedian John Mulaney has left rehab after two months and is doing well in sober outpatient care, an exclusive source told Page Six.

We uniquely revealed that Mulaney went into rehab for 60 days last year after struggling with alcohol and drug use, including cocaine.

The move came as a shock to 38-year-old fans, although the seemingly clean comic talked about his past drug struggles in his popular Netflix stand-up specials.

A source said: “John completed 60 days in rehab and is now in sober outpatient care. He’s fine, although he’s not yet ready to go back to work. ”

When he went to rehab, a source told us: “His fans know that he struggled with sobriety in the past, he talked about it openly. Unfortunately, he fought again during the pandemic.

“He is committed to his recovery, he is not fighting rehabilitation.”

The former Saturday Night Live writer’s decision to go to rehab was met with a wave of support from fans and fellow comedians.

In a 2019 interview, Mulaney revealed that he started drinking at age 13. “I drank to get attention,” he said. “I was very outgoing and, at 12, I wasn’t. I didn’t know how to act. And then I was drinking and it was hilarious again. “

He said in a Esquire cover story that his drink also prompted him to start using drugs. He says that although he never liked to smoke marijuana, he “loved” cocaine and got involved with prescription drugs.

“I wasn’t a good athlete, so maybe it was something young male from ‘This is the physical feat I can do. Three Vicodin and a tequila and I’m still standing, ‘”he said. Who is the athlete now? “

When Mulaney was a teenager, his parents sent him to a psychiatrist, who told him that he was partly a nice boy, partly a “gorilla who wants to kill the other half”.

And in his 2012 special “New in Town”, he said, “I don’t drink. I drank, then drank a lot and had to stop. This surprises the audience a lot, because I don’t look like someone who used to do anything. “

After years of passing out and even drinking perfume, the tipping point was a 2005 bender when he was 23.

He told Esquire: “I went crazy that weekend that was just, like, appearing and disappearing from a movie … It was crazy … I was like, ‘You’re fucking out of control'”, he said . “And I thought to myself, ‘I don’t like this guy anymore. I’m not rooting for him ‘”.

Mulaney said he stopped using cocaine and drinking alcohol a month apart. He claimed that he did not go to rehab, he just went through a withdrawal crisis and was sober for many years after that.

But last December, Mulaney revealed that he had taken on the role of editor of Seth Meyers’ “Late Night” program because of his own mental health.

During the quarantine, I thought, ‘Why am I going totally crazy and suddenly I’m telling my own wife about my accomplishments?’ ”Said Mulaney in“ Jimmy Kimmel Live !, ”while describing how a lack of routine can negatively affect a person’s well-being. “I really needed a job.”

“I like having a boss and tasks to do,” he added to Kimmel. “When I’m in charge of something, not so much of the best thing.”

He added that his psychiatrist agreed with the change.

“She said to me, ‘Without an external structure, I have no confidence in you to prosper’ … and she would know, because I told her everything in my brain,” he said.

A Mulaney representative declined to comment.
