John Legend shares an emotional tribute to his late grandmother: “May she rest in peace after running a great race”
John Legend is heavy-hearted at the sad news of his grandmother’s passing on Tuesday, February 2.
The family’s beloved matriarch, Marjorie Maxine Stephens, died in the early hours of the morning, just days before her 91st birthday.
And in a touching tribute on Instagram, the 11 Grammy winner honored ‘her full and blessed life’ by painting the image of a woman who was an eternal light of love and support for her family until her final moments on Planet Earth.

‘We are very grateful for the life she lived, for the love she shared with her many children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and more’, Legend (born John Roger Stephens) shared in his long tribute.
The musician from heaven called her ‘the most caring and thoughtful grandmother you could imagine’, who sent all her immediate family’s birthday cards with money until her death.
“She was the host of our annual Christmas celebrations until we literally couldn’t fit in her little pink house on Heard Avenue in Springfield, Ohio,” he continued.
The legend made a point of sharing about how her grandmother was still “active and full of curiosity and energy” in her final years, and that she remained firm with her unconditional love and family support.

The musician, who is one of 16 people, and the first black to win all four EGOT awards (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony), expressed gratitude that his grandmother could enjoy the success of him and his family.
‘I am so happy that she saw the fruits of everything she gave us. She traveled the world with us, she went to my first Grammy. She had to experience the success of all her descendants, ‘he said with obvious pride.
‘We are the family we are, the people we are because of the love that she has poured into us.’
The Ohio native concluded by celebrating a life well lived.
