John David Washington and Zendaya can’t decide if ‘Malcolm & Marie’ belong to each other: ‘This is bad’

Stars show impressive performances in the Netflix movie they produced in quarantine

John David Washington and Zendaya are quite convincing as a couple in the midst of an epic explosion in Malcolm and Marie, but none of the actors are sure how they feel about the couple they portray.

The talented duo is the only actress in Netflix’s black and white film of Sam Levinson that was produced at the beginning of the COVID-19 crisis. Described as a “painfully romantic drama in which a filmmaker (Washington) and his girlfriend (Zendaya) return home after the release of a commemorative film, while he awaits what will be an imminent financial and critical success. The night changes suddenly as revelations about their relationships begin to surface, testing the strength of their love ”is a wonder to behold. It is also a game-changing moment for Zendaya, whose portrait of a recovering drug addict, Marie, solidifies the fact that she is an adult woman and a true Hollywood force.

Even though the 24-year-old actress embodies the complicated character beautifully, even she is unsure whether Malcolm, played by Washington, and Marie should be together or not.

“I’m divided as everyone is probably … I think the beauty of what we do there is – really, the goal is to have a conversation; the dialogue and the comings and goings, the polarizing aspect of it ”, said Zendaya theGrio after the first screening of the film. “I don’t think we should all agree. And it shouldn’t be that black and white. I think it should be a little confusing and confused and conflicting, you know? So, like anyone else, I will and will come back.

“Sometimes I think they are great for each other and are the only people who can really deal with each other and see and push each other in the right way,” she continued. “And they just know each other like nobody else. And then, other days I think, this is not how it should work. Like, this is wrong. They need to go to therapy. They need not be together. They are codependent. This is bad. “

“It is difficult and it is – and it is confusing for me too, I have been able to live with the characters and I am still learning more about them,” added Zendaya. “I think, as we do interviews, like me – people point out different things that I may not have understood or recognized.”

Washington appears to be equally unsure whether Malcolm and Marie belong or not.

“It may be healthy for their art, but I don’t know if it is healthy for their personal lives. I really don’t want to. That said, is this the only time they’ve gone this far? We are talking about a snapshot of their relationship, ”he said.

“This could be the worst night they’ve ever had … If this is the biggest fight they’ve ever had, I think maybe they can get over it,” said the 36-year-old actor. “But if this is building up, if there has been a little, you know, there have been incremental things leading up to this night … so no, I think this is not at all healthy.”

Viewers are likely to be equally divided when they watch the movie that exposes the dark places we go to when love is at stake. Many may be mesmerized by Zendaya’s truly remarkable presence on the screen or frustrated by the director’s veiled blows on matters about which he may not be the best source. Certainly everyone will be amazed at the gravity that it took for this small team to carry out this resource under the extreme and uncertain circumstances that the blockade presented.

“There is a certain level of responsibility, not only as a creative, but also as a producer. We are both producers in this and not just as ‘producers’, but as we really put our names in it, we put our heart in it, we put our money in it, ”said Zendaya, who also starred in the HBO series created by Levinson Euphoria.

“There were many strict protocols in place and we were able to make this bubble of people; this production bubble, that once inside, you are inside. You can not exit. We were also able to reconstruct what the fair model of cinema is, ”she continues.

“We had real ownership in this film, which I don’t know how many times it has been done before, but it seems like the right way to structure films,” said Zendaya, “that the people who really give their heart and soul and their time in something you can really see the benefit of it. So it was scary, of course, and scary. But we also worked hard and everyone who was there wanted to be ”.

Although his performance was overlooked when the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced Golden Globe Awards nominees, Zendaya has already made an impact on the industry with this project.

“I am proud of the film, but even more proud of how we were able to make it,” she said.
