John Carlson scored on a break. Yes, you read that right.

When Peter Laviolette joined Capitals, we were told that he would involve his defensive players more in attack.

We saw exactly that when John Carlson scored his first goal of the season – with a perfect shot on an escape.

In the second period, Caps moved from defense to attack, with Oshie releasing Carlson with a quick pass. Carlson shouted over the ice and beat Carter Hutton to the other side of the net.

Carlson led all NHL defenders on points last season with 75.

TJ Oshie grabbed the crowd, his third point of the night.
