John Calipari tried to fit into the country’s top team as a last-second opponent.

During his radio show on Wednesday night, the Kentucky Wildcats basketball coach told Tom Leach that the mysterious program he was trying to put on his Thursday night schedule was none other than the Gonzaga Bulldogs, who they are currently undefeated at 24-0 and ranked as the best overall consensus team in the country. Calipari prefaced by saying that there is no team in the country that scares him.

“The game I tried to play and we almost finished was Gonzaga,” said Calipari. “We were going to push Gonzaga into the middle of our agenda. Check Few [Gonzaga’s head coach] and I said – I didn’t say I would do it publicly, but I thought it would help them and help us. And our children were absolutely ecstatic. They wanted to do that, we just couldn’t do it. “

Unfortunately, the game never materialized and Kentucky will end its season this Saturday against the South Carolina Gamecocks. The Wildcats are coming out of a defeat on Tuesday night to Ole Miss Rebels and currently have an overall record of 8-15 and a 7-9 mark in conference games.
