Monday morning brought the news that Jets and Patriots were trying to strike a deal with shipowner Joe Thuney, but he will be leaving AFC East.

Thuney’s agent, Mike McCartney, announced that his client had agreed to a five-year contract with the Chiefs. Several reports estimate the value of the deal at $ 80 million.

The average annual salary of $ 15 million is the maximum for any custodian on a multi-year contract. Brandon Scherff is expected to earn more than $ 18 million in a franchise with Washington.

The move comes after the released Chiefs face Eric Fisher and Mitchell Schwartz. They also have Austin Reiter, Mike Remmers, Kelechi Osemele and Daniel Kilgore heading for the free agency, so Thuney will be the centerpiece of an offensive line with a new look in Kansas City next season.
