Jimmy Kimmel unloads on Ted Cruz during the Capitol invasion

Last month, comedian Jimmy Kimmel devoted almost all of his nightly monologue to Ted Cruz’s “despicable” and stupid defense of Trump’s unfounded electoral challenge. It is an empty crusade that Cruz, despite having the president calling his wife ugly and accusing his father of being involved in the JFK murder, went all-in – presumably in the cynical hope that he could one day become the candidate who represents the MAGA side of the Republican Party in 2024.

And on Wednesday night, after President Trump incited a betrayal attack on the Capitol, where his followers effectively held the halls of Congress hostage for several hours while the supporting police and the National Guard were nowhere to be found, Kimmel addressed the lawless insurrection.

“Thank you for joining us at the end of Donald Trump’s betrayal. This was one of those days that I always thought I would be left behind. This is not the kind of thing I ever imagined would happen in this country in my life, ”announced Kimmel.

He continued: “The President of the United States, because he is too angry, too insecure and too incompetent to deal with the fact that he lost an election – a fair election; an election that was no different than any other election; an election he lost is 7 million votes and 70 voters – turns a mob angry against members of Congress and his own vice president, not to mention endangering the Capitol Police, those blue lives he claims to be so important for him.

Calling him “Benedict Arnold”, Kimmel went to the rally at which Trump spoke earlier in the day, where he unleashed the invasion of the United States Capitol, saying to his loyal MAGA chiefs: “And after that, we will go down to there, and I’ll be there with you, let’s go down … to the Capitol and let’s cheer for our brave senators and congressmen and women … And we probably won’t cheer for some of them. Because you will never get back to our country with weakness. You have to show strength and you have to be strong. (Parts of the Trump rally crowd later stormed the Capitol.)
