The contempt decision against Leon and Tina Hendrix follows a long legal battle that began in 2017, when Experience Hendrix LLC – the sole owner of the late rocker’s musical compositions, sound recordings, copyrights and trademarks – and Authentic Hendrix LLC, the Hendrix’s licensing arm opened an infringement case. In addition, the court said that Leon and Tina Hendrix sponsored and sponsored a benefit to raise money for their non-profit organization “Jimi Hendrix Music” and sold a Jimi Hendrix T-shirt on their website with a Hendrix image on the cover and a quote from Hendrix, followed by a protected signature by Jimi Hendrix on the back.
Although Tina Hendrix argued in court allegations that the money raised for the HMA academy was for a nonprofit charity, the court said that nonprofit status does not exempt her from her duty to comply with the permanent injunction. Engelmayer also ordered Leon to pay the opposition attorney’s fees and said that if he and Tina Hendrix did not comply, an additional fine could also be imposed, stating that Leon “carries the keys to his prison in his own pocket”.
