The Jets may be facing an enigma in a possible search for Deshaun Watson.
Although at least one report has pointed out the Jets as Watson’s favorite destination in a negotiation, the disgruntled Texas star quarterback knows that the collection of picks they could give up to land him on could be a double-edged sword.
“… [Watson] is aware that any deal with New York would limit the ability of the Jets to build a quality list around him, ”reported The Athletic on Thursday as part of a deep dive into how Watson’s Houston weather turned sour.
Although Texans have insisted that they do not intend to negotiate Watson, despite his request, the Houston Chronicle previously reported that the price he asked for would be at least two choices in the first round, two choices in the second round and two young defensive beginners.
The Jets have two first-round choices in each of the next two projects – including choices # 2 and # 23 this April – but the package that may be needed to switch to Watson can certainly be expensive for a team coming out of one 2 to 14 seasons without talent and with many holes to fill.
Watson has a no-trade clause that can give him some say where he will go when and if Texans move forward in negotiations.
In the meantime, Watson and his circle are still waiting for a deal, as the NFL quarterback carousel continues to spin – with the Colts’ Carson Wentz negotiation by the Eagles on Thursday, the last negotiation to be closed.
“What is the criterion for a quarterback to ask to be traded and then actually be traded?” Quincy Avery, Watson’s personal quarterback trainer, tweeted shortly after Wentz had its reported trade desire fulfilled. “Asking for a friend.”
