Jennifer Lopez took the opening stage to present a medley of patriotic songs – and she had a moment to slip into one of her own hits and address the nation in Spanish.
Lopez started his performance with “This Land is Your Land”, making the transition to “America the Beautiful”. Then, Lopez spoke in Spanish.
“A nation, less Dios, indivisible, with liberation and justice for all,” she said, reciting a part of the Pledge of Allegiance: “A nation, under God, indivisible with freedom and justice for all.”
Lopez, who is Puerto Rican, has several Latin albums and often sings in Spanish. During the Super Bowl halftime show last year, Lopez and the other headliner Shakira celebrated their cultures by singing and dancing, giving representation to Hispanic Americans. Lopez also brought in Colombian singer J Balvin and Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny.
Lopez’s opening performances resembled her Super Bowl show, when she plunged into her 2000 hit “Let’s Get Loud”, which she also sang during the break with her daughter, Emme Muñiz.
Many fans on Twitter were proud It took Lopez a moment to add his own talent and recite part of the promise in Spanish. “We were seeing the opening and @JLo spoke spanish. One of the students in my class said ‘I know what she said !!’ That’s why representation is important! ” a teacher tweeted.
“Jennifer Lopez saying part of the pledge of allegiance in Spanish … Incredible. So wonderfully appropriate,” wrote a Twitter user.
“Yes, it was, I’m a Puerto Rican and I can’t stop crying,” replied another.
