Jennifer Lopez learned a lot about herself in therapy.
On Friday, the 51-year-old singer and actress sat down for a virtual chat with trainer Jay Shetty at the first edition of Coach Conversations, the fashion brand’s monthly YouTube series, to reflect on life’s lessons, including self-love.
“I remember when I was in therapy at the beginning, you know, in my late thirties and there was a lot of talk about how to love yourself and I was like, ‘I love myself,'” Lopez told Shetty. “But obviously I was doing all those things in my personal relationships that didn’t seem to be loving me, but I didn’t even understand the concept of that. It took and it’s a journey and it’s still a journey for me. “
While Lopez did not specify which relationships were problematic, she married singer Marc Anthony in 2004 (the same year that she and fiance Ben Affleck broke up). The ex-couple, who shares twins Max and Emme, 12, announced their separation in 2011 and Lopez left with choreographer Casper Smart.
Lopez also thought about spending a year in quarantine with fiance Alex Rodriguez and their children together. Downtime turned out to be a blessing in disguise as it forced them to take a break from their traditional hours without interruption.
But Lopez, who said his goal is to “empower, inspire and entertain”, is still focused on his career. His last show, performing at President Joe Biden’s inauguration ceremony, included “America the Beautiful” and Woody Guthrie’s 1944 song “This Land Is Your Land”. Making the performance his own, Lopez added a phrase from Pledge of Allegiance in Spanish and a line from his classic hit “Let’s Get Loud”.
Lopez still remained humble, admitting that when she started her career as a dancer, she was not entirely confident about her abilities. “I wasn’t always the best dancer – I was a great dancer, but I wasn’t the best – and everyone is so competitive in those areas, but I knew from the start because of that, I put something extra into it,” she said. heart in it, I put my soul in it. In every movement, there was a purpose behind it. ”
