The Eagles fired Doug Pederson on Monday. Is Pederson’s replacement already on the team?
Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie mentioned the name of assistant coach and running backs Duce Staley as a potential candidate.
“I would expect Duce Staley to be a candidate,” said Lurie. “He is a great representative of the Eagles, he knows our values. I would expect him to participate in the research as well. “
Staley, 45, played for the Eagles from 1997-2003 and joined the team’s technical team in 2011. He served on the teams of Andy Reid, Chip Kelly and Pederson.
The Eagles interviewed Staley for the position of head coach in 2016 before signing Pederson. Staley was also a candidate for the position of offensive coordinator before the 2018 season, when the Eagles hired Mike Groh.
Rooney’s rule requires the Eagles to interview at least two minority candidates for the job before hiring. Philadelphia had a black coach in its history, having hired Ray Rhodes in 1995.
“I think we are very open and it is important to ensure that we have some of the best minority candidates in the search,” said Lurie. “It is very important for us and for the championship. It is what matters most. “
