2021 marks JBL’s 75th anniversary, but instead of (or perhaps also) relaxing with a vintage wine and writing a memoir, the US audio brand is celebrating its anniversary with the launch of a limited version of its legendary boxes L100 Classic sound system.
The new L100 Classic 75 is based on the L100 Classic launched in 2018 (which in turn were updates to the original 1970 L100 model). In our five-star review last spring, we called retro-designed floor supports “a viable alternative to the best of its modern rivals”.
Each of the 75 pairs of the new limited edition L100 Classic relies heavily on the iconic 1970s-style design of the lineage, but acoustic and aesthetic adjustments have been made to highlight the occasion and move speaker performance.
Although the driver’s cones remain the same, there is now an improved woofer suspension design and a revised network to include two-wire features, with double sets of gold-plated connecting posts.
The teak veneer adorning all sides of the cabinet is combined with a black Quadrex foam grid that is now complete with a gold and black JBL logo. Special edition badges are also found on the front and back, including a commemorative plaque that includes the signature of the system’s chief engineer, Chris Hagen, and the individual production pair number. Even the wooden box with which the L100 Classic 75 and the corresponding JS-120 floor stands are supplied is decorated with limited edition artwork.
Announced as one of several new JBL products at the company’s CES 2021 event today, the L100 Classic 75 will be available starting in May and costs $ 5,500 a pair. Would you like to go all out for JBL’s 75th anniversary? There is also a new integrated streaming amplifier SA750.
