Jay-Z, Carole King and Tina Turner are nominated for induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

Jay-Z, Carole King and Tina Turner lead the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame nominees, as 2021 marks the class of potential honorees with the greatest racial diversity in 15 years

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame announced its most gender-inclusive vote of all time on Wednesday, which includes legends like Carole King and Tina Turner.

In addition to recognizing seven nominated women, this year marks the the class of potential candidates with the greatest racial diversity since 2006, with “nine artists in total being people of color,” according to Yahoo.

“This remarkable vote reflects the diversity and depth of the artists and music that the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame celebrates,” said John Sykes, who serves as president of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, in a statement.

He continued: ‘These nominees left an indelible impact on the world’s soundscape and influenced countless artists who followed them.’

Other nominated women include Mary J. Blige, Dionne Warwick, Kate Bush, Chaka Khan and The Go-Go’s.

Both King and Turner had previously been nominated for the 79-year-old singer It’s Too Late, gaining entry into the non-performer category in 1989 and Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll, 81, as part of the duo Ike & Tina Turner.

Surprisingly, this is the first indication of Go-Go, although more than 40 years have passed since the release of their debut album, Beauty and the Beat, which remains the only album entirely written by a female band, which played their instruments themselves, to go first on the Billboard Hot 200.

In their first year of eligibility, rapper Jay-Z and Foo Fighters also received nominations.

Musicians have to wait at least 25 years after their debut album to be considered for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, which introduced the late superstar Whitney Houston last year.

Other nominees include Devo, LL Cool J, The New York Dolls, Rage Against the Machine and Todd Rundgren.

Fans can participate in the induction selection process until April 30 by voting on the Hall of Fame website or at the museum in Cleveland.

“The five best artists selected by the public will form a fan ballot that will be counted along with the other ballots to choose those nominated for 2021,” according to CNN.
