Java’s ring of fire continues: Indonesian volcanoes erupt – in photos | World News

Volcanoes in Java continue to show worrying signs, with authorities closely monitoring seismic activity as they spew lava and ash over many kilometers into the atmosphere.

At 3,676 meters (12,060 feet), Mount Semeru in East Java is one of Indonesia’s highest volcanoes. Mount Merapi in central Java is an active volcano of 2,929 meters (9,610 feet) with a hiking trail to the top and a surrounding national park. Both continue to bother the authorities.

On January 16, 2021, the Semeru volcano observatory issued an aviation warning for an ash cloud moving northeast with an ash cloud top at about 5,676 meters (18,163 feet) above sea level, but it can be taller than what can be clearly observed.
