In addition, he answers an amusing question from his ‘Five-Year Engagement’ director, Nicholas Stoller.
With director Gabriela Cowperthwaite Our friends, opens in select cinemas and On Demand tomorrow for Gravitas Ventures and Universal Pictures Home Entertainment, I recently got to talk to Jason Segel about being part of such an inspiring film. If you haven’t seen the trailer, Our friends is based on Esquire’s article “The Friend: Love Is Not a Big Enough Word” by Matthew Teague and it’s about a family (Dakota Johnson and Casey Affleck) dealing with terminal cancer and the close friend (Segel) who moves in to help them. I recently watched the movie and thought it was incredibly well done and had incredible performances from everyone in the cast. Furthermore, as someone who has lost several close friends in recent years, the film was a beautiful reminder of the complexities of friendship and the importance of making each day worthwhile. Our friends also stars Jake Owen, Gwendoline Christie, Cherry Jones, Isabella Kaiand Violet McGraw.
During the interview, Segel talks about why he has been selective with his recent acting roles and what this project has attracted him, like Our friends weaves a lot of humor and levity, even when dealing with a serious matter, as it was having people who knew the family watching the movies and much more. Furthermore, he reveals why he was so nervous doing Dispatches from elsewhere, what is the most difficult thing about doing comedy and answers a fun question from your Five-year commitment director Nicholas Stoller.
Check out what he says below and below is exactly what we talked about and the official synopsis.
Jason Segel:
-
Nicholas Stoller wanted to know if it was more difficult to do drama or act against a turkey puppet voiced by Brian Posehn?
-
As the most difficult thing to do comedy is not to laugh.
-
As he has been very selective about the roles he takes, so about what was Our friends that made you want to do that?
-
How to make Dispatches from elsewhere he was two years old and he was nervous about not being able to finish the job.
-
How Our friends it weaves a lot of humor and levity, although it is a serious matter.
-
As most of the film is a celebration of life and friendship.
-
How did they shoot in the real place where the story unfolded and what was it like to have people who knew the family watching the movies?
-
The way Gabriela Cowperthwaite made the film and how her previous work making documentaries influenced the film.
-
How many of the scenes were totally improvised for a purpose.
-
What will he work on in 2021?
Here is the official synopsis:
Our friend tells the Teague family’s inspiring and extraordinary real story – journalist Matt (Casey Affleck), his vibrant wife Nicole (Dakota Johnson) and his two daughters – and how their lives were affected by Nicole’s terminal cancer diagnosis. As Matt’s responsibilities as a janitor and father become increasingly heavy, the couple’s best friend, Dane Faucheux (Jason Segel) offers to help. While Dane puts his life on hold to be with his friends, the impact of this life-changing decision proves bigger and deeper than anyone could have imagined.
