The South Carolina football program is close to getting a double QB / WR.
Quarterback Jason Brown and wide receiver EJ Jenkins made season records with St. Francis (PA) in 2019, but now both are on the move in search of a bigger challenge. St. Francis is an FCS school at the Northeast Conference that recently announced it would not host a college football season in the spring. After this announcement, the passer / receiver set decided to explore opportunities elsewhere.
One such opportunity is with the University of South Carolina, a program that desperately needs both quarterbacks and wideouts. Gamecocks are losing their primary target, Shi Smith, to the NFL draft, while former early-signal players Collin Hill and Ryan Hilinski announced their intentions to enter the transfer portal.
Brown was an FCS All-American in sophomore year in 2019, after putting video game-type numbers into Red Flash. He set school records for passing yards (3,084) and touchdowns (28).
The Virginia native received some interest in FBS programs, most notably Charlotte, but ended up opting for St. Francis. He was considered a three-star recruit by 247 Sports.
Brown’s college and high school classmate Jenkins is also on the portal and wants to stay with her quarterback at the next stop.
Jenkins is a large receiver with speed that could create incompatibilities against opposite side. The former three-star recruit originally committed to Old Dominion, an FBS program in Virginia, but decided to follow Brown to St. Francis.
In 2019, the pass catcher held 39 receptions and averaged nearly 20 yards per reception. He set a school record for a single season, with 13 touchdowns received, and was named the second team in conference.
Jenkins can really project himself as a tight end if he ends up at Columbia. His 110-kilogram body should allow him to take on blocking tasks, while his height and athleticism should help him take advantage of smaller defensive backs.
Phil Kornblut of the Post and Courier recently spoke with the pair about plans for a future with South Carolina.
“We were told that we both have offers. They just have to get us in. Admissions take about five days to get the percentage and hours of classes and things like that. We will be ready to commit as soon as everything is finished. We will have to be registered on March 1st. “
The two are expected to join the squad this spring, giving Gamecocks an immediate boost in experience and production in offensive positions of need.
