Jasmine Harrison becomes the youngest woman to row alone across the ocean

The 21-year-old took 70 days, 3 hours and 48 minutes to cross the Atlantic.

A British woman became the youngest woman to row alone across the ocean, completing a 3,000-mile journey across the Atlantic.

Jasmine Harrison, 21, was inspired to take part in the challenge after she saw a similar race in 2018, she wrote on Twitter. At the time, she was teaching swimming lessons in the Caribbean and “decided at that moment that she wanted to do this”.

This year, 21 boats from around the world participated in the challenge, which included some solo rowers and others with teams of up to four rowers, according to Atlantic Campaigns, which organizes the “The World Toughest Row” challenge.

Harrison started in the Canary Islands of Spain on December 12 and arrived in Antigua on Saturday – 70 days, 3 hours and 48 minutes, according to Atlantic Campaigns.

The organization gave regular updates on Harrison’s whereabouts. She accomplished the feat by turning asleep and rowing every two hours.

Harrison also posted weekly updates on her Instagram page, sharing adventures like when she found a striped marlin and paddled in a patch of water covered with seaweed.

Harrison experienced a setback on Thursday when, with about 100 miles to go, his boat capsized, according to Atlantic Campaigns. At the time, she also informed her security officer that she had injured her left elbow, and the race doctor passed her over the phone, the organization said.

A few hours later, Harrison told the race doctor that she was “much happier and calmer”, was working on the pain and would be able to finish the race without help.

“Paddling in the ocean does not end until you step safely on the coast, the risks remain everywhere and there is no time to relax,” the organization said in a statement at the time.

As he approached the landfall, Harrison held smoke signals in each hand, sporting a British flag once on land.

When asked by reporters what was the first thing she wanted when stepping on the ground, she replied, “Food. Definitely food.”

Harrison’s adventures also raised more than $ 14,000 for the relief aid organization Shelterbox.

Before Harrison, the youngest woman to row in the ocean was American Katie Spotz, who crossed the Atlantic from east to west in 2010 at age 22.
