We spent years making that joke and Jared Leto just … said.
Well, it happened. On Sunday, the official trailer for Zack Snyder’s Justice League confirmed director Zack Snyder it is extremely online. The race to launch the official trailer was exciting. In the past few weeks, new details, photos and teaser videos have been released announcing the debut of HBO Max’s Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Last week, we took a closer look Jared Letoof Joker, who will jump from 2016 Suicide squad and in Snyder’s cut of Justice League, as well as a teaser with the great evil of Snyder’s film, Darkseid.
Speaking of Leto’s Joker, he is part of the reason why we now believe that Snyder is more in tune with the times than we previously thought. Right at the end of the official trailer, we have a preview of the Joker scene with Batman (Ben Affleck) In the clip, Joker looks at a post-apocalyptic desert. In doing so, he tells Batman: “We live in a society where honor is a distant memory. Isn’t that right, Batman?”
Now, if you are Extremely Online like Snyder, you know that “We live in a society” has been the main fuel of memes for years. It is a phrase that, although it was not originally said by Joker, became the abbreviation to describe his pessimistic and chaotic view of life. It was also a phrase that he lived most of his life on the internet. Hearing it said by a character who is so closely associated with him was quite mind-blowing – a fact that Leto recognized when he retweeted the Snyder Cut trailer with the caption: “We live in a society.”
The phrase “We live in a society” has become synonymous with Joker, as meme culture has become even more intertwined with social media. In fact, as Mashable reminds us, the “We live in a society” part began as edgelord meme material and has grown in popularity to such an extent that now it looks like Harley Quinn is hitting us over the head with his big wooden mallet whenever he wants appears online. In 2019, fans went so far as to initiate a Change.org petition to have Joaquin Phoenix say “We live in a society” in Todd Phillips‘ Clown. And although that didn’t happen, they didn’t have to wait long before Snyder’s cut Justice League The trailer confirmed this as canonical when Leto’s Joker said those five magic words for everyone to hear on Sunday.

credit where credit is due: having Leto Joker really saying “we live in a society” in that trailer is a grade A troll and I respect that

having the wildcard saying “we live in a society” is obviously a stroke of crazed brilliance on the part of zack, but the trailer editor who put that phrase directly on the title card, ensuring it was the image that would certainly go viral, deserves it a raise
