Jared Goff of the Los Angeles Rams undergoes thumb surgery; unlikely to play on Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals

Los Angeles Rams quarterback Jared Goff underwent surgery on his broken right thumb on Monday in Los Angeles and is unlikely to play the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday, ESPN sources said Adam Schefter.

If he is unable to play on Sunday, Goff may return to the playoffs if the Rams advance.

John Wolford is Goff’s backup and is now in line to get started.

Goff injured his thumb in the final seconds of the third quarter on Sunday in Seattle by completing a 9-yard pass to tight end Gerald Everett. As he moved forward on his launch, Goff’s right hand hit the helmet on the Seahawks’ defensive side, Benson Mayowa.

“I put it back,” said Goff, “and I’m done with the game.”

During his post-game video conference with reporters, Goff downplayed the impact of the injury and said his thumb “was not terrible”.

He also said his thumb did not bother him in shooting, as Goff completed 6 of 14 passes in 74 yards after suffering the injury.

Rams’ 20-9 loss to the Seahawks on Sunday marked the first time this season that they have lost two consecutive games. They can still guarantee a playoff spot with a victory against the Cardinals or a victory for the Green Bay Packers at the Chicago Bears in Week 17.
