Jamie Spears criticizes GOP for demanding guardianship hearing

Britney Spears’ father is responding to House Republicans, who have called for a hearing on legal guardianship in light of the #FreeBritney movement, which has raised public concern about the lack of control the pop megastar seems to have over his life.

Speaking to TMZ in an interview published on Tuesday, Vivian Thoreen, the lawyer who represents Jamie Spears on guardianship, criticized the Reps. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) And Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) for calling the President of the House Judiciary Committee, Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) to hold a hearing, as well as for his comments regarding the reasons for Jamie as “questionable”.

“Britney’s Property Guardianship was co-managed by a private professional trustee and her father until the beginning of 2019. At that time, Britney requested in court documents that her father be the sole conservator of her property. Your Tutela da Pessoa is not administered by your father, but by a private professional trustee, ”she told the vehicle.

Thoreen argued that guardianship was a system with checks and balances, with annual reviews by experts.

She also stated that the 39-year-old superstar, as well as her legal team, participated in the decisions involving guardianship over the years.

Asked specifically about Gaetz and Jordan’s concerns about Jamie’s intentions to control all aspects of his adult daughter’s life, Thoreen praised the father’s care for his daughter.

“Jamie Spears diligently and professionally fulfilled his duties as one of Britney’s conservatives, and his love for his daughter and dedication to protecting her is clearly evident to the court,” said the lawyer, adding that Britney and her legal team had never entered. with the process a real petition to end the guardianship.

The substantial assets of the “Oops! The singer… I Did It Again ”, now 39, has been under her father’s control since 2008.

In their letter to Nadler, Gaetz and Jordan argued: “When situations suggest an unfair deprivation of these rights by the government, we have an obligation to oversee and explore possible solutions.”

“Given the constitutional freedoms at stake and the opacity of these arrangements, it is up to our Committee to convene a hearing to examine whether Americans are unjustly imprisoned in custody,” they wrote.

Spears is suing to remove his father’s guardianship. In November, a court refused to return control of its property, but added a co-conservative, the Bessemer Trust, to jointly manage its business.

The battles of the “I’m a Slave 4 U” singer with her father and the media became the subject of much public debate this year with the release of the FX / New York Times documentary “Framing Britney Spears” on Hulu.

Gaetz and Jordan, who are best known for their vehement defense of former President Donald Trump, cited the left-wing American Civil Liberties Union in their letter.

“ACLU is concerned that individuals are being ‘deprived of virtually all of their civil rights through guardianship and guardianship’ and called for the exploration of reforms to ensure that unnecessary guardianship can be closed so that these individuals can run their own lives ‘,” they wrote.

“The most striking example is perhaps the case of multi-platinum artist Britney Spears. Since 2008, Ms. Spears has been under court-ordered tutelage. The facts and circumstances that gave rise to this agreement remain in dispute, but involve questionable motives and legal tactics by his now conservative father, Jamie Spears. “

Gaetz and Jordan continue: “In court appearances in August and November 2020, Ms. Spears’ lawyer represented in court that Ms. Spears’ strongly opposed ‘having her father as a conservative, that she was afraid of her father , and that she would not perform again publicly as long as this arrangement persisted. Despite these calls, Mr. Spears remains a conservator of his property. “

“In. Spears is not alone. There are countless other Americans unfairly deprived of their freedoms by others with few resources.”
